Treatment What does breast augmentation surgery consist of?

Breast augmentation surgery is a treatment in which we implant a prosthesis to achieve a breast with more volume, according to the size desired by the patient. This operation requires specialists in breast surgery who can perform the correct evaluation of each case to advise on the best type of technique. Under the popular and widespread term of breast augmentation, plastic surgeons solve many problems that are included in the International Classification of Diseases. The breast augmentation operation is a type of surgery that lasts between 1 and 2 hours approximately, and in which general anesthesia is used to achieve a better muscle relaxation that allows placing the prosthesis according to the chosen technique.

With the guarantee of a leading clinic in plastic surgery and breast augmentation.

Implants

The most commonly used silicone implants are microtextured (anatomical or round) or smooth. There are also micropolyurethane implants for specific cases.
The technological advance of these devices has allowed problems such as capsular contracture to have, in any case, a low incidence.
They can be round or anatomical. The projection refers to the forward expansion produced by this implant.

Security

Breast implants are mechanical devices, and as such, they can fail. Although it is rare, the prostheses can suffer wear and tear and break. The breakage is usually unpredictable since a patient can be more than 25 years with the same prosthesis without any complications, while another may suffer a breakage after 5 years. For this reason, it is important to know that there is a possibility that a replacement may be necessary.

Warranty

All breast implants used in Spain have the EEC marking and some of them have the American FDA marking. Most commercial companies provide a replacement warranty in case of device failure, but this must be due to a manufacturing defect and it must be the factory itself who determines whether it is applicable or not.

The price of a breast augmentation

Our breast augmentation price range (from approx 4500€) includes:

  1. Choosing the approach (basically, where do you want to have the scar?): Dr. Jesús Benito masters all the techniques for breast augmentation. In addition, Dr. Jesús Benito received the McGhan Award 2003 for the introduction of the axillary approach in Spain, being the leading specialist. The approach is decided during the previous consultations.
  2. Operate with the surgeon with whom you visit from the beginning: all visits and the operation is performed by the surgeon with whom you visit at the first consultation. You are not operated on by ‘someone from the team’ once you have been anesthetized. This is very important to us, as an exercise in transparency and professionalism.

Follow-up and revisions during 1 year included: the revisions include an ultrasound study of the implant, something in which we are pioneers in Spain and we train the rest of the surgeons in the country.

4. Rupture and complications insurance: in case of rupture and capsular contracture you do not have to pay any cost in the first 5 years.

5. Fees and clinic: during hospitalization a companion can be with you at no additional cost.

6. Implant warranty: we work with the best implants in the market. With the implants we give you their cards that make reference to the quantity and material that you carry, and includes the guarantee of the company that manufactures them.

7. Prices without surprises: the price you are given includes everything that has been agreed upon, there are no surprises or later additions.

Preoperative

During the preoperative period for breast augmentation, it is necessary to determine what the desired results are. A common concern is the appropriate choice of the size of the prosthesis. For this purpose, at Antiaging Group Barcelona, Dr. Jesús Benito Ruiz uses special gauges designed to ensure that the volume of the prosthesis is the most appropriate according to the height and diameter of the patient’s thorax.

How are the prostheses fitted?

Breast implants can be placed through the armpit, the submammary fold or the areola and under or over the pectoralis major muscle. All options are possible, for this reason, the advantages and disadvantages of each of them are explained in the consultation. It should be noted that excellent results can be obtained with all types of placement and that the plastic surgeon is the one who recommends the appropriate technique.

What is the breast surgery postoperative period like?

The result in breast augmentation is immediate, although we recommend waiting a few months to see the final result. During 3-4 days we recommend some rest, after this time you can usually live a normal life, but you should avoid efforts or weights between 15 to 30 days, depending on the plane where the breast implant is located.

  1. They can be showered, even wetting the wounds, after 24 hours.
  2. The arms can be moved without any problems, but avoid straining the pectoral muscle.
  3. The pain lasts about 3 or 4 days but it is controllable with conventional analgesia. If the implant is under the muscle it may hurt a little more.
  4. The patient can driveand return to work after 3-4 days.
  5. To pick up a weight you have to do the same as when you have back pain: a squat. This way you use the strength of your legs, not your arms.
  6. Stretching the pectoralis major muscle.
  7. You must sleep on your back for one month.
  8. Running and jumping should be avoided (so that the breast does not “bounce”) and a sports bra should be worn day and night for 1 month.
  9. The breasts should not be massaged
  10. No sunbathing in the first month.
  11. After the first month after surgery, you can exercise with breast implants.

Some swelling is to be expected in the first month, which then decreases. We know that the volume between 4 and 12 months hardly changes although there is a reduction of the breast projection by 30%.

It is also normal to have alterations in sensitivity, especially in the lower part of the breasts. This sensitivity is going to recover and may take up to 1 year for full recovery. It is very rare to have a loss of sensitivity in the areola, but not impossible.

Frequently Asked Questions

The answer is that there is no better or worse. They are two different techniques that will produce different results. Implants always project more and give more sensation of volume. Fat does not project and at equal volume it always looks smaller. The main advantage of fat is that it is very good for shaping and filling contours. The combination of implants and fat is currently the best option available.

Personalized evaluation by the surgeon. It is not a general visit with a commercial, but with the surgeon who will operate and advise you on the best possible option.

It includes the medical team’s fees, hospitalization and surgery expenses, implants, preoperative study (analysis, electrocardiogram) and insurance in case of capsular contracture or implant rupture within the first five years, so that reoperation does not involve any additional cost.

Breast augmentation surgery should always be performed in the operating room to have the optimal protocol conditions of asepsis and professional equipment to proceed in a completely safe way with the intervention. Currently we perform it in the Sagrada Familia Clinic.

Anesthesia is general anesthesia.

When any type of incision is made in the skin, there will always be a more or less visible scar depending on the patient’s healing capacity. However, the surgeon will always take into account how to proceed in order to make it as inconspicuous as possible.

After an augmentation mammoplasty it is normal to suffer some discomfort that can be mitigated with the use of painkillers prescribed by the specialist. However, when the prosthesis is placed behind the pectoral muscle this discomfort may be somewhat more noticeable than when placed in front. It must be remembered, in these cases, that the surgical technique of choice will be evaluated with the patient, previously solving all the doubts and frequently asked questions about breast augmentation.

After 4 days you can drive (car, not motorcycle) and work as long as it is not physical. The most important thing is not to strain the pectoral muscles.

No, it is not necessary. There is no need to change the implants as long as they are well and there is no problem such as capsular contracture or rupture.

No, they are not. They may need to be replaced at some point. The older they are, the more likely they will need to be replaced.
