Skin spots are tissue damages that occur due to an abnormal distribution of melanin and melanocytes, which pigment the skin. In general, the most concerning spots are usually facial spots, as they are the most visible. Fortunately, in aesthetic medicine, we have found an effective treatment for removing facial spots, thanks to laser systems.

Laser technology has brought a true revolution in aesthetic medicine and, in particular, in the field of dermatology.

The appearance of spots is often caused by prolonged sun exposure, stress, smoking, pollution, poor diet, skin aging, and/or hormonal changes, as well as other external factors that cause pigmentation changes. In each case, the laser and aesthetic medicine specialist must first identify the type of spots according to their characteristics and origin in order to provide the appropriate treatment.

Treatment

The laser works effectively for depigmentation by reducing the accumulation of melanin that creates the spot, making it possible to even out the skin tone and unify its color. Although results are noticeable from the first session, the standard treatment protocol consists of three sessions spaced one month apart, which can be adapted to the conditions of each skin type. Prior to laser spot removal it is important to inform about taking drugs, as some of them may have a photosensitizing effect and interfere with the laser treatment. The treatment to remove spots with laser, although it is a quick procedure that does not require topical anesthesia, may cause a slight redness at the end of the session, which lasts 24 to 48 hours.

Types of treatment

Today, laser systems are very effective for treating solar or senile lentigines, which are the most common type of spots. These technologies can be combined in a single session to treat different spots. This allows us to optimize results and leave the skin clearer and more beautiful, also achieving a rejuvenating effect on the treated skin. At AGB, we have three different types of light technology to treat various benign pigmentations.

KTP Laser

The KTP laser emits light at a wavelength of 532 nm, allowing the treatment of deep benign pigmented lesions, and it is one of the most effective treatments for removing freckles or sun spots. One of its advantages is that its adjustable handpiece is made of sapphire crystal, making it possible to observe the immediate response of the pigment to the light pulse.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) AFT™

With a wavelength of 540–950 nm, this IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) system is ideal for treating spots and superficial vascular lesions. This high-intensity light source allows the removal of solar and senile lentigines, and additionally enhances the skin’s appearance by improving its texture and quality, giving it an even and uniform tone.

Q-SWITCH Laser (Electra®)

The Q-SWITCH laser, with a wavelength of 1064 nm, delivers light energy in a very short period of time, making it an effective treatment for spots. Additionally, this laser helps eliminate melasma in more advanced stages of treatment, when the spots have already been previously treated with a depigmenting chemical peel, in order to prevent rebound effects.

Post-treatment

After facial laser treatment, special care must be taken with sun exposure. Sun exposure should be avoided for one to two months, and during the treatment, it is advisable to use high sun protection with a minimum SPF 50 on exposed skin areas. In any case, the use of sunscreen is always recommended. On the other hand, makeup can be used from the day after the treatment, without forgetting the importance of dermocosmetic care (cleansing, hydration, nourishment, and protection), following the recommendations provided by the aesthetic medicine specialist. Dra. Laura Salvador Miranda

Dr. Laura Salvador Miranda is a founding partner of Antiaging Group Barcelona, with more than 25 years of experience in Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery. With a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona, she specialized in General Surgery at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. Since 1999 she has been dedicated exclusively to Aesthetic Medicine, leading the Aesthetic Medicine group since 2004 and directing the area of advanced laser treatments since 2006.

She is currently a professor in the Master’s Program in Aesthetic Medicine and Wellness at IFMiL (University of Barcelona – COMB), actively participates in research and scientific publications, and is a member of medical societies such as SEME, SELMQ, SETGRA, and the COMB’s Section of Aesthetic Medicine.
