Chemical myomodulation is one of the most in-demand treatments in aesthetic medicine due to its proven results and effectiveness. The use of this medication for aesthetic purposes has been authorized for over 25 years.
Myomodulation is the ideal treatment to eliminate facial wrinkles that appear from repeated facial movements—those related to facial expressions. It primarily targets forehead lines, frown lines (between the eyebrows), periocular wrinkles (crow’s feet), perioral wrinkles (vertical lip lines), as well as neck bands.
A neurotoxin is used, which also has other medical applications such as in the treatment of migraines or for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) in the underarms, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. The application of the toxin stops sweat production just a few days after infiltration. Its effect lasts for approximately six months.
The active ingredient acts by inhibiting the transmission of action potentials at the neuromuscular junction of the motor unit, thereby blocking the release of acetylcholine. In other words, it prevents the muscle from receiving the signal to contract, causing a slight muscular paralysis. As a result, the treated facial muscles do not respond to voluntary commands. In this way, we can very specifically block the appearance of wrinkles—only in those areas where we do not want them to form.
This treatment is recommended for expression lines that appear mainly between the eyebrows, on the forehead, and around the eyes (crow’s feet). Treating the upper third of the face provides a more relaxed expression, improves skin quality, and reduces expression wrinkles, giving an overall fresher, well-rested look.
Expression lines are the wrinkles on the face that appear when making a gesture and disappear once the face is relaxed. These are the wrinkles that disappear when the treatment is applied.
By injecting the toxin into the wrinkle, the muscles in the area relax, and the wrinkle either disappears or becomes less visible. This restores the skin’s natural smoothness and youthful appearance.
If wrinkles do not disappear completely, the myomodulation treatment should be combined with another aesthetic procedure, such as dermal fillers, skinboosters, laser, or dermaroller. It has also been used in some cases to treat upper lip wrinkles or neck bands.
The glabella (frown lines) is one of the first areas where the use of the neurotoxin was approved. The treatment works by blocking the corrugator muscles, which are responsible for moving the eyebrows and causing the frown in the midline between them.
The alternative to this medical treatment is surgery for a permanent solution, which involves either denervation or removal of the corrugator muscles.
Myomodulation is performed through the infiltration of small amounts of neurotoxin into the cited muscles and regions. The infiltration is carried out with virtually painless microinjections.
The treatment is performed in a single session, on an outpatient basis, in our own clinic, and does not require local anesthesia, although it may be applied.
The patient can immediately resume their usual activities after the session. The effect of the injection begins to appear after three or four days, and becomes complete between seven and ten days, at which point the results can be noticed.
The effects of selective chemical myomodulation are not permanent and tend to diminish after three or four months, disappearing between five and six months. From then on, the treatment can be repeated, subject to medical evaluation.
In cases where these wrinkles are deeper, the treatment is complemented with a filler in the area, which restores the skin’s lost volume.
Selective chemical myomodulation is a simple treatment that does not require plastic surgery, and for this reason, it is increasingly in demand among people who want to eliminate the signs of aging.
It depends on the number of areas to be treated and, therefore, on the dose used. The minimum cost is 275 euros.
This treatment must be administered by an aesthetic medical professional; it cannot be self-administered. It requires a prior diagnosis to evaluate the areas where it will be applied, as well as follow-up of the results throughout its duration.
The risks of not attending a specialized medical center for this treatment are highly dangerous, since if it is poorly administered, it can cause serious health damage and unpleasant side effects.

It is a temporary treatment for wrinkles and generally lasts between 3 and 6 months. After that period, a follow-up treatment will be needed to maintain the results.
In the long term, it has not been shown to cause any negative effects on the skin. In fact, some studies suggest that long-term use of this treatment may have benefits in preventing wrinkles and improving skin quality.
