What is cellulite?

Cellulite is an alteration of the deepest layers of the skin in which adipose tissue accumulates forming nodules of fat, toxins and water. Different studies estimate that 90% of women from adolescence on suffer from cellulite, which although it is not a health problem, it is a clear aesthetic concern for many people, especially for women. Today, thanks to the latest advances in medical technology, in our clinic in Barcelona we have several aesthetic treatments to eliminate or reduce its presence.

Cellulite affects almost all women (and some men), regardless of whether they are overweight or underweight. That is to say, it is an aesthetic problem that also appears in cases in which there is no excess weight, a balanced diet is followed and exercise is practiced, although obesity is another problem that can aggravate it.

The truth is that cellulite is due to an alteration of the adipocytes (cells that form the fatty tissue) that are responsible for cushioning external impacts and maintaining body temperature. Although these adipose cells are necessary for the body, when they are damaged and the fat is not in balance, they increase in size and press on the skin, creating a kind of dimples, which is why it is also known as “orange peel skin“.

This alteration of the subcutaneous tissue can affect the buttocks, thighs and abdomen, but can also appear on the knees, ankles and back. Although it is not a serious health problem, cellulite can lead to an alteration of certain physiological functions of the adipose, fibrous and connective tissues. For this reason, people with cellulite often suffer from fluid and toxin retention and a high level of estrogen production (female sex hormones).

In fact, the origin of cellulite is multifactorial, that is, there are many reasons why the body develops it. In addition to hormonal changes, genetics, lifestyle habits, weight gain or loss, energy burning in the body and dehydration are factors that cause the appearance of cellulite, which is also aggravated if there are vascular or lymphatic problems, such as venous insufficiency or varicose veins.

Types of cellulite

It is important to differentiate between cellulite and localized fat, since the presence of the former does not imply an excess of adipose tissue, but an alteration of the same, so that if the fat is removed does not mean that cellulite disappears, which can manifest itself in different ways. Some can be seen with the naked eye and others can only be appreciated when pressure is applied to the skin, which allows us to classify it by degrees. But generally, depending on the consistency of the skin, the types of cellulite can be classified as follows:

AGB Graficos Celulitis Tipos

Hard or fibrous cellulite

It appears on toned, stiff and hard to the touch tissues so it is only visible when the area is pinched and the characteristic dimples appear. It is typical of young women who do physical exercise. It is usually associated with stretch marks, dry skin and easy bruising, and would correspond to grade 2 according to its visibility on the skin.

Soft or flaccid cellulite

It arises when the tissues appear flaccid and sway with movement, that is, it is visible from any position without the need for any type of pressure. This type of cellulite appears in inactive and sedentary women, who do not exercise or who have experienced a sudden weight loss.

Edematous cellulite

Located in the lower limbs, it is the most severe but also the least frequent. It is accompanied by swelling, fluid retention and occasional pain. It is linked to hormonal processes and can appear as early as adolescence. In these cases, anti-cellulite treatment should be combined with measures to improve circulation.

Soft or flaccid cellulite

The most common is to find that the same person suffers from a combination of this problem in different areas of the body, for example, hard cellulite on the inner thigh and soft cellulite on the outer thigh, regardless of the person’s weight.

Anti-cellulite treatments

Radiofrequency

Accent Prime® is a body contouring system that stimulates the lymphatic and arteriovenous system of fat tissue, reducing fluid retention, tightening adjacent tissues, leading to the formation of new collagen in the deep layer of the skin and breaking down fat. It improves skin texture and flaccidity and reduces volume.

Mesotherapy

It is a technique of intradermal microinjections with a cocktail of active substances that are administered in several sessions. It eliminates cellulite by dissolving fat accumulation and activating blood and lymphatic circulation, which favors the elimination of excess fluids and toxins, improves skin quality and reduces heaviness in the legs.

Carboxytherapy

In combination with the previous ones, it is one of the most effective techniques to eliminate cellulite, which consists of performing microinjections of CO2 gas. It instantly improves the vascular oxygen supply, especially in the areas most affected by cellulite. Several sessions are required and the results are visible in a short time.

Argon Plasma

A new invasive radiofrequency system is used, which retracts the fibrous septa and the skin. It has to be done in the operating room.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no single, universally effective treatment for cellulite, as its treatment depends on each individual case. Some of the most effective treatments include a combination of shock wave therapy, mesotherapy, carboxytherapy and radiofrequency. The choice of treatment will depend on the specific needs of each patient and the severity of the cellulite.

The most effective treatment for cellulite on the legs depends on the severity and extent of the cellulite. Shock wave therapy, mesotherapy, carboxytherapy and radiofrequency are some of the treatments that can be effective in reducing the appearance of cellulite on the legs. It is important to remember that treatment should be customized for best results.

The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the cellulite and each patient’s response to treatment. In general, a treatment of several sessions over a period of several weeks or months is recommended to achieve the best results. It is important to keep in mind that complete cellulite elimination can be difficult to achieve and that treatment maintenance is necessary to maintain results.

There is no definitive answer to this question, as the severity of cellulite can vary from patient to patient. Cellulite can be classified into different grades according to severity, from mild cellulite to more advanced and difficult to treat cellulite. More advanced cellulite is characterized by more noticeable lumps and dimpling of the skin, and may require more intense treatment to achieve a significant reduction in its appearance.
