For calf augmentation, semi-solid, fusiform, non-rigid implants are used. The operation consists of placing one or two silicone implants under the calf muscle. In the past they were placed between the calf muscle and the skin, but in this position they can be seen in the long term, in patients with severe atrophy, the technique may be different.
The incision is placed in the crease at the back of the knee. Alternatively, fat obtained by liposuction and treated with the Coleman system can be used to fill the area. The fat gives a good contour but does not give projection. To achieve muscle projection and increase the prosthesis by 2-3 cm is a much better method. Fat however is very useful for the lower third of the leg and ankle, since the implant cannot be placed in these areas.
It is performed under local anesthesia and sedation, epidural, or general anesthesia, depending on the case.
At this moment it is our favorite. The submuscular placement allows the implant to be completely hidden so that the edges of the implant are not visible at all. The effect of the prosthesis is to lift the muscle mass. If the patient does physical exercise the muscle will increase in size over the prosthesis so that a greater contour can be noticed. The only drawback is that the immediate postoperative period is somewhat more painful.
It is the classic technique of implantation. The prosthesis is placed between the fascia and the musculature. It is an easy access and the result is good. However,
There is no limitation for walking but you have to avoid climbing stairs and of course physical exercise of legs is forbidden for 5-6 weeks. During this time you will have to wear knee pads for walking. The stitches are removed after 10 days. We will monitor you almost weekly to determine the position of the implants by ultrasound, in our own clinic.
You can start exercising after 5-6 weeks, after the mandatory medical control. Given the nature of this intervention , controls are absolutely necessary and you will have to come to the consultation as many times as deemed appropriate. The implants can move if you do not follow the medical recommendations to the letter. From the 2nd month you will be able to do any physical activity without restrictions.
As with all silicone implants, it is possible that they may require replacement because they break. That is why follow-up ultrasound scans are necessary. If they do not give problems, they are not changed.
