Facial Peeling: What Is It?

Facial peeling is a medical-aesthetic technique ideal for treating signs of skin aging.

The skin on the face is one of the most affected by the passage of time, sun exposure, and other environmental factors. Chemical peeling is one of the most effective treatments for restoring skin tone, color, luminosity, and texture. This procedure helps combat not only facial aging but also spots and conditions such as acne.

A facial peeling is a medical treatment that exfoliates the skin to address signs of aging: dull or weathered skin (appearance, color, texture, and/or feel) lacking luminosity, age or pigment spots, fine to moderate wrinkles, enlarged pores, minor scars, and/or acne on the face, neck, and décolleté.

In many settings, chemical peeling is also considered a “deep facial cleansing” treatment, as the results achieved with this technique help restore the skin’s optimal condition, significantly improving its texture. In short, this facial peeling is a chemical exfoliation with multiple benefits.

Treatment: What Does a Facial Peeling Consist Of?

Peeling is one of the outpatient facial treatments that can be performed in a medical-aesthetic clinic under professional supervision. The specialist, who will have previously assessed the patient’s skin condition, will recommend the most suitable type of peeling (or combination protocol) for each case.

That is, the composition and concentration of the product or products used, the method of application, the contact time with the skin surface, and the skin type will determine the outcome of the treatment.

Pre-treatment care is a fundamental step to ensure the effectiveness of this technique and a post-treatment with minimal discomfort. In general, it is usually essential to properly prepare the skin before the first peeling by using specific creams. This preparation aims to refine the outermost layer of the skin (the epidermis), which will allow for a much more even application of the treatment.

Then, this treatment consists of applying a chemical product to the skin, causing peeling or exfoliation of the skin. The effect can be superficial, medium, or deep depending on the chemicals used, with the aim of addressing signs of facial aging. In this way, the effects of facial peeling can range from a barely noticeable exfoliation to a complete epidermal renewal.

Facial peeling is usually carried out over several sessions, spaced out over time. Each session can last between 30 and 60 minutes, and depending on the type of product, between 3 to 8 sessions may be required. In addition, it is also necessary to follow a dermocosmetic care protocol between sessions.

Superficial and medium peels achieve moderate facial rejuvenation, meaning they help eliminate superficial skin signs such as spots and fine wrinkles, and restore the skin’s color, texture, and tone lost over time and due to harmful agents like sun exposure, smoking, alcohol, stress, etc. In some patients, it is combined with other techniques such as facial lifting, facial fillers like hyaluronic acid, facial stimulation mesotherapy, etc.

We are launching a new combo treatment to improve the skin: peeling + hydration mesotherapy. We suggest combining a superficial medical peeling treatment (suitable for your skin type and needs) with a hydration mesotherapy session in the same appointment.

By combining both techniques, the effect on the skin is much more noticeable after one week. If a deeper effect is desired, the sessions can be repeated after 3 to 4 weeks.

Types of Facial Peels

There are multiple chemical substances that produce the peeling effect on the skin. The most classic are glycolic acid, salicylic acid, azelaic acid, and mandelic acid peels. However, there is a wide range of products that can be used as a single treatment or in different combinations (resorcinol, trichloroacetic acid, phenol, lactic acid, kojic acid).

In cases of melasma, we apply a specific depigmenting peel, such as buffered phenol peel or tranexamic acid peel, combined with depigmenting masks. For melasma, if possible, preparatory at-home treatment before the peel, post-peel care, and maintenance treatment are even more important, since without strict adherence to protocols, the recurrence of melasma is highly likely.

Currently, the application of combined peeling protocols allows us to achieve better results with more subtle peeling and, in many cases, even without subsequent redness. Among the effective product combination protocols we use at AGB are peels with:

Post-Facial Peeling Care

As mentioned, between sessions, an appropriate dermocosmetic regimen will be established, which includes gentle cleansing, hydration, and repair, as well as strict sun protection. It is important to remember not to scratch, exfoliate, or pinch the facial skin after the peeling.

At the end of the treatment, appropriate maintenance guidelines will be established, which may include undergoing occasional peeling sessions, in addition to essential dermocosmetic care: cleansing, hydration, nourishment, and protection.

Also, as mentioned, depending on the type of peeling, it is possible to experience anything from skin redness to localized peeling within a maximum period of one week, revealing excellent skin renewal that leaves it much more radiant.

Depending on the nature and intensity of the sessions you wish to undergo, as well as the individual characteristics of each patient (their desires, social and work circumstances, etc.), at Antiaging Group Barcelona we will advise you on the choice of the protocol that best suits your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a frequently asked question when undergoing this treatment, but the duration of the effects of a skin-quality improvement treatment is directly influenced by how well we maintain the results of the peel. In other words, if after a peel we follow the skincare routine recommended by our doctor, the results will last over time. However, if we neglect cleansing and care routines after the peel, the skin will soon return to its previous state. So, if you decide to have a peel, take care of the results and you will maintain beautiful skin for months.
