Buttock augmentation techniques

Buttock augmentation is a plastic surgery with a high demand in our clinic in Barcelona and has long been the new focus of attention in cosmetic surgery.

We have several techniques to reshape the buttocks to reshape the buttocks area, some of them Some of them have been published and presented in different scientific publications and international congresses. Their choice and application will be made in consensus with the patient, according to their particularities and needs.

There are different approaches to enhance the buttock area. On the one hand, these will depend on the patient’s objective: to increase the projection of the buttocks, or to remodel the area. On the other hand, we differentiate between men and women, because the results must be able to maintain the characteristic features of both sexes.

Treatment to increase buttocks without surgery

A filler product (polylactic) can be used to give more volume. Several sessions are needed to achieve significant augmentation.

Buttock augmentation with surgery

Buttock augmentation, both in men and women, is a very grateful plastic surgery, with a relatively fast recovery and spectacular results. We have two approaches that will depend on the needs and characteristics of the patient, and that will be defined during the first consultation with the surgeon. Buttock implants or buttock lipofilling, which is better? Consult with our doctors to find out which will best suit your buttock augmentation.

Buttock augmentation with own fat

High definition liposuction is the most usual technique for obtaining fat to be used for the remodeling of the gluteal region. We can increase the volume in the central area of the buttock and on the sides by re-injecting the fat obtained by liposuction. The fat is injected strictly into the subcutaneous tissue. For safety reasons (embolism) we avoid placing fat in the gluteus maximus muscle.

Buttock augmentation with implants

In women, liposuction of the lumbar area, waist and flanks is usually associated to model this area and increase the curve in the buttock when placing the prosthesis. The fat obtained is re-injected into the peripheral area not covered by the implant. The prosthesis fills the upper two thirds of the buttocks very well, but not the lower one. In men the prosthesis is enough but in women it is necessary to associate some lipofilling. This hybrid technique is our favorite because it gives the best results.

Types of buttock implants

The buttock implant is made of cohesive silicone gel, it is flatter and has more resistance than the one used in breast augmentation. This allows the area to support without problems the forces that come from the use of the gluteus maximus muscle (walking, running, jumping) and sitting.

Currently, we have two forms of buttock prostheses: oval and round. The shape of the buttock prosthesis is chosen according to the shape of the buttock and what we want to obtain. Most women prefer round prostheses, because they give more projection and round out the curves of the buttocks. In women with flat or somewhat sagging buttocks it is better to use oval buttocks, to avoid a double contour image or a too rounded and artificial result. In men we also use oval buttocks, since, in the hands of a plastic surgeon recognized in this surgery such as Dr. Jesús Benito, we can imitate a muscular buttock shape depending on how he orients the implant. The volume of the buttocks depends on the available space and therefore the width and height of the pelvis.

The prosthesis is placed under the gluteus maximus muscle, so that it is not visible externally. The buttock augmentation incision is made in the crease between both buttocks, as low as possible so that it is hidden. The type of general anesthesia with which the operation is performed is general anesthesia, so that the muscle is relaxed and we can insert the prosthesis easily. Drains are not usually placed.

Postoperative and recovery from gluteoplasty

In this type of surgery to increase the buttocks, the patient’s collaboration is very important so that the scar remains stable and the prosthesis does not move or cause asymmetries. For this reason, the patient must follow some behavioral guidelines during the weeks following the intervention:

The prosthesis is not rejected or encapsulated. The risk of infection is low, although very careful hygiene is required until the stitches are removed. In addition, it is necessary to take antibiotics for ten days after surgery to minimize the risk of infection.

The patient with silicone implants in the buttocks should know and be advised that intramuscular injections should not be performed in the buttocks, for obvious reasons. Finally, we want to remind that augmentations with liquid silicone injection should not be performed. The prosthesis, which can be removed in case of complications or by the patient’s desire, is not the same as liquid silicone, which infiltrates all tissues, has a high rate of complications and is impossible to remove. We never use this procedure.

Buttock augmentation, in both men and women, is a very grateful plastic surgery, with a relatively fast recovery and spectacular results.

Frequently Asked Questions

The duration of fat injected into the buttocks can vary from person to person, but in general it is expected that at least 60-70% of the transplanted fat will remain permanently. This means that the fat that survives after the first few months should be long lasting.

Both fat transfer and implants have their pros and cons. The choice depends on each patient’s individual needs and goals, as well as anatomical features and medical history. Therefore, it is important to discuss the benefits and risks of each option with your surgeon to make the best decision.

In general, fat can be transferred to the buttocks several times, as long as there is enough suitable fat available and the patient is healthy to undergo another surgery.

Pain after Lipotransfer varies from person to person, but usually lasts from 1 to 2 weeks. Pain medication may be prescribed to help control discomfort during this time.

Most patients should avoid sitting or lying on their back for the first 2-3 weeks after the Lipotransfer to avoid putting too much pressure on the buttocks. Your surgeon can provide you with a special sitting cushion that can help distribute the weight more evenly.

It is important to note that the final result of the Lipotransfer is not immediate and it may take several months to see the final shape and size. After surgery, the buttock area will look swollen and may be bruised. The swelling and bruising may last for several weeks before the final results begin to be seen.
