What exactly are varicose veins?

A varicose vein is, by definition, an abnormal dilation of a vein. In addition to its unsightly component, varicose veins can cause health problems such as phlebitis, thrombosis, ulcers, skin blemishes, etc. Any vein can dilate, although those of the lower extremities are the most prone to suffer from this alteration, due to the gravity that accompanies the bipedal posture (on two legs) of humans.

Why do varicose veins appear?

Women, and with greater incidence after the age of 40, are more prone to suffer from varicose veins. Approximately 15% of the population suffers from varicose veins throughout their lives. The reasons for the appearance of varicose veins are genetic and linked to lifestyle habits. Some of the causes that can trigger the appearance of varicose veins are:

How to prevent varicose veins

Here is a series of recommendations that will help you prevent varicose veins:

Treatments

Vascular sclerosis consists of the production of a controlled inflammatory reaction in the internal walls of the dilated vein. In this way the varicose vein becomes a fibrous cord, which is reabsorbed by the body itself, making it disappear. With Vascular Laser we eliminate the small veins through the laser light.

The treatments for varicose veins that we use at the Antiaging Group Barcelona clinic are:

Chemical sclerosis

It consists of the injection of a sclerosing liquid whose characteristics or properties provoke the aforementioned reaction.

Vascular Laser or Photosclerosis

The elimination of varicose veins using laser light energy. By means of specific light energies with vascular affinity we achieve the coagulation and collapse of the vascular walls of the small veins.

Both procedures are effective for the treatment of small veins that produce an unsightly appearance of our legs. In general, when we perform vascular treatments we combine both techniques to obtain the best result with the least number of sessions possible. The application of one technique or the other will be decided after the diagnosis made during the first consultation. THE IDEAL IS ALWAYS THE COMBINATION, to obtain the best results.

A session can last between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the procedure chosen and the extent of the area to be treated. In general, several sessions are required in the same area for optimal results. A month should pass from one session to the next if we want to repeat the same area, if we do a different area we can approach it the following week.

Post-Treatment

In some cases we will advise the placement of a compression stocking on the treated area for 24-48 hours, which can be removed as many times as necessary to complete body hygiene or apply a prescribed topical product.

Sclerotherapy and vascular laser are treatments to eliminate varicose veins, excellent for small varicose veins, varicosities and spider veins.

We must bear in mind that, even if we definitively eliminate those veins we are concerned about, there is a probability that others will appear over time, since the basic venous insufficiency cannot be cured. In cases of venous insufficiency with significant and symptomatic involvement, it will be necessary to consult a vascular surgeon for the assessment of very thick varicose veins, main venous trunks involved or major perforating veins (communications between the superficial and deep venous systems) affected, which may require vascular surgery or other types of treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vein sclerosis is a cosmetic medical procedure that involves injecting a chemical solution into a varicose or spider vein in order to cause the vein to close and disappear. The chemical solution irritates the vein wall, causing it to swell and close. Over time, the body reabsorbs the treated vein and blood is redirected to other nearby healthy veins. Vein sclerosis is an effective and safe treatment for the removal of varicose and spider veins. However, it is important to note that not all varicose veins are suitable for vein sclerosis treatment and that the physician must carefully evaluate each patient before recommending this procedure.

The time it takes for a sclerosis session to eliminate varicose veins varies depending on the size and number of veins to be treated. In general, a vein sclerosis session usually lasts between 15 and 45 minutes. During the session, the physician will inject the chemical solution into the varicose or spider veins using a fine needle. After the injection, pressure may be applied to the treated area to prevent bruising and to help the chemical solution distribute evenly in the vein. In some cases, more than one sclerosis session may be recommended to achieve the desired results.

The time it takes to see the results of laser treatment or sclerosis to eliminate varicose veins may vary depending on the size and number of veins treated, as well as each patient’s individual response to treatment. In general, results may begin to be visible within the first few weeks after treatment. However, several sessions may be needed to achieve the desired results and the improvement may be gradual and progressive.
