Nose surgery or rhinoplasty is one of the most frequent cosmetic surgery operations in our clinic in Barcelona. It is achieved by changing the appearance, structure or function of the nose, changing its size, changing its shape or changing the angle between the nose and upper lip. It can help correct birth defects, nasal injuries and some respiratory problems. In addition, if we combine rhinoplasty with chin surgery, we will harmonize the facial profile.
The goal of rhinoplasty is to improve the appearance of the nose while maintaining or improving its respiratory function.
The surgery is performed through small cuts, inside the nose, with which it can be achieved:
Only in some cases of nose with complex shape, wide tip or in reinterventions is the so-called open rhinoplasty performed, in which a small cut is made in the columella (the skin bridge between the tip of the nose and the lip that separates the two nostrils).
The patient is discharged after the effects of anesthesia, between 3 and 6 hours after surgery. During the first days the patient must remain at rest, incorporated and drink plenty of fluids and follow the prescribed analgesic medication.
After surgery, a splint is placed to protect the nose and maintain its shape, as well as small plugs. It is not a painful surgery. The day after the intervention the plugs are removed, and a week after the splint. It usually appears an inflammation with swelling that lasts about a month. In open rhinoplasty there may be some residual inflammation for a longer period of time. It should be borne in mind that the final result may take a few months or even a year to be appreciated.
It is advisable to use photoprotective creams during the first weeks after the operation and to refrain from wearing glasses resting directly on the nose.
If you want to read more about the postoperative period after a rhinoplasty, we discuss it at greater length in this article.
Rhinoplasty is plastic surgery that focuses on aesthetic aspects, changing the shape and/or size of the nose. It is usually performed for the modification of the nasal hump (curved shaped bone that protrudes), lateral deviations of the entire nose, and lateral deviations of the nose.
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure focused on the functional aspects of the nose. It usually works by correcting deviations of the nasal septum, which does not necessarily produce external or aesthetic changes. In this case, the surgeon makes incisions inside the nose to act on the septum (bone in the posterior part, cartilage in the anterior part). Unlike rhinoplasty, since there is no rupture of the septum, the postoperative period does not include an external splint. The patient does not present hematomas either. In two or three days the tamponades are removed and the patient can lead a normal life.
The combination of both procedures is called septorhinoplasty or functional rhinoplasty.
Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is a rhinoplasty that uses a special system that cuts the bone and cartilage with ultrasound. Although the operation is longer with this system, the precision is greater and the appearance of bruises and bruises is significantly reduced.
The traditional or closed rhinoplasty is one in which the plastic surgeon accesses the cartilage, septum or other areas of work through the nostrils, so no incisions are made. The main advantage is the absence of scars resulting from the intervention.
In the case of open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made in the columella as well as inside the nostrils. The skin is detached from the cartilage and bone and a direct view of them is obtained. As previously indicated, this technique is used in complicated cases, nasal tip surgery or in second interventions. The patient will present a small scar almost imperceptible.
Like any surgery, there are risks of infection and those related to anesthesia. However, these are minimal. Our plastic surgeons will explain in detail any questions you may have before the intervention.

Obviously it will depend on the nose and what we have to do. The average price is about 5000 euros.
The shape of the nose can be modified by injecting fillers such as hyaluronic acid. Keep in mind that the result will last about a year and will have to be repeated. It also needs a very experienced doctor because this technique has more complications than a surgical rhinoplasty.
