What is Liposuction for body contouring?

It is the best treatment to improve body contouring.

Liposculpture refers to the remodeling of the body contour using liposuction, a surgical procedure that destroys fat deposits installed in certain areas of the body, including face and neck, arms, trunk, abdomen, buttocks, hips and thighs, knees, calves and ankles.

What does liposuction consist of?

Liposuction is not a substitute for weight reduction, but a method of removing localized deposits of fatty tissue that do not respond to diet or exercise.

It consists of the extraction of body fat by means of a more or less thick cannula through a mechanical fan-shaped movement and aspiration, usually at -1 atmosphere, through very small incisions (less than 1 cm). It is still an aggressive procedure and that is why in large volumes there is a limitation of 4 liters of extraction. In order to reduce the problems, systems have been introduced to:

The current liposculpture seeks not only the extraction of fat and volume reduction in certain areas of the body, but also to increase those deficient areas through fat grafts. For example, we perform liposuction of the back and flanks and transplant that fat to the buttock, to look for a very feminine curve. A qualified plastic surgeon can use these combinations to effectively sculpt the figure.

In our plastic surgery clinic at Antiaging Group Barcelona, we have introduced technologies that help to safely remove fat and improve skin retraction. Highlights include the use of ultrasound, the 1470 nm radial laser system(known as LIPOLIFE™), and argon-plasma to improve skin retraction as it acts directly on subcutaneous tissue septa, tightening them….

Laser or ultrasound make the technique more comfortable, it bleeds less, it is less traumatic, by heating the tissue the skin retracts more and we can use the cells as a graft, because they are still viable.

Areas where liposuction can be performed

Collar

Treatment of the double chin and improvement of the neck angle. It is usually associated with a facelift.

Arms

Lipectomy has been practically abandoned in this region. Large volumes of fat have been removed (1000 cc) with very good skin retraction. It only requires some particular postoperative care that, if followed, facilitates skin retraction.

Abdomen

In young patients or with good skin tone the amount of excess fat (love handles) can be eliminated with good results. If there is muscular weakness (rectus diastasis) due to pregnancy, or there is a lot of skin left over, it is better to opt for open plastic surgery (abdominoplasty). The flank area is especially grateful to be aspirated.

Back

The “love handles” on the back offer very good results after being treated with liposuction.

Buttocks and thighs

It is the most popular area. The most important thing when applying the technique in this area is not to empty, but to model the contour, to practice what is known as liposculpture. The association of radiofrequency with liposuction has allowed to improve even more the results in this area.

Knees

It is possible to eliminate the accumulations that appear on the inside of the knees and above the kneecap.

Legs

It is mainly to reshape the ankle area, where fat tends to accumulate. The natural curves of the leg muscles (calves) can also be redefined.

Postoperative period after liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery with low risks if the technique is known and is performed by a specialist in a recognized clinic.

The pain of a liposculpture depends on the bruise (hematoma) but it is not usually more than 2 or 3 days. Then when touching the area you can feel some discomfort, but not pain.

The pain of liposculpture is well treated with conventional analgesia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Well, both, because in reality they are the same. Liposculpture is the objective, what we want to do with liposuction, which is the technique used. If liposuction is used well and with artistic criteria, we have liposculpture.

The best candidate for liposuction is the relatively normal weight individual who has excess fat in specific areas of the body since firm, elastic skin leads to a better final contour after liposuction. Depending on the number and extent of areas to be treated, local anesthesia, local plus sedation, epidural or general anesthesia may be required.

When a patient comes to our clinic in Barcelona for liposuction there is always one question that is repeated: is it a myth that localized fat can be lost? The answer is no. Localized fat can be lost forever. Localized fat is lost forever with liposuction, but it can settle in other parts of the body if the patient is not careful.

Liposuction is not the target treatment for cellulite, although it is for localized fat. To treat it, we recommend treatments focused on improving the subcutaneous tissue that is altered, such as body mesotherapy, radiofrequency or even ultrasound.

Liposuction can be performed right after the cesarean section, but the truth is that in our clinic we advise against it, because it seems to us an unsafe procedure, since the abdomen has to change a lot in the months following the birth of the baby.

In cases of people with too much excess skin after liposuction, the skin does not readapt itself to the new contour. However, the success of this procedure depends exclusively on the ability of the dermis to retract. Additional techniques such as laser or ultrasound (VASER) have precisely this objective: they heat the tissue to achieve this retraction (and reduce bleeding).

Yes, it is common to combine both techniques of liposuction and lipectomy for better results.

The results of liposuction can be seen immediately after. However, they are more visible when the edema (swelling) of the treated area subsides, which happens after the third month.

After liposuction there will be some swelling and bruising that may take two or three weeks to go away. There is some swelling, massage and wearing a girdle is necessary, but the discomfort is moderate if we heed the doctor’s recommendations.

It is obvious that it will depend on the extent of the liposuction performed, in terms of extension and volume aspirated. Normal life can be resumed within a week and after a month the recovery is complete. Then the treated area will continue to heal and evolve and the results will be seen after half a year.

Abdominoplasty because we also treat the musculature and we also associate liposuction.
