What is it?

Facial lipodystrophy is characterized by alterations in the distribution of facial fat, accompanied by alterations in the metabolism of fats (cholesterol and triglycerides) and sugars. The physical expression of lipodystrophy can be in the form of marked atrophy and thinness of certain areas of the body, or in the appearance of fat accumulations. Atrophy usually affects the face, buttocks, legs, and arms, and fat accumulations especially in the back, or at the level of the abdomen.

Causes of facial fat loss

There are diseases such as Barraquer-Simons syndrome that are characterized by a loss of facial fat. There are also autoimmune diseases, such as scleroderma. There is also HIV-related facial lipodystrophy. It can also be caused by medications, such as retroviral treatments. Or by the injection of unauthorized substances into the face, which are used as fillers or to “improve” the skin.

There are also physiological reasons, such as extreme weight loss, aging or very intense physical exercise.

Treatment

There are many options, which will depend on each specific case but, for the time being, fat tissue micrografts are usually the most recommended treatment. Since it is a material obtained from the patient himself there is no possibility of rejection or complications associated with the composition of the material. Synthetic materials present few complications but in this aspect the innocuousness of fat surpasses them.

At Antiaging Group Barcelona we have improved the process of obtaining and preparing the fat for injection, so that long-term reabsorption is negligible, while we use different areas of the body to obtain this fat, which allows us to extend the treatment to 60% of patients.

Why don't they lose the injected fat?

Purified Autologous Adipose Tissue Micrografts are obtained from areas of the body with fat resistant to lipodystrophy, where even sometimes there are clusters. Lipodystrophy affects a specific “fat” but not a “zone” of the body, if we introduce “another fat” resistant to the treatment to that “zone”, there is no reason for it to be lost even if the lipodystrophy progresses.

Once the Purified Autologous Adipose Tissue Micrografts are integrated, the behavior of that skin is as if nothing had happened. If in the future it is necessary to make a cut, remove a cyst or treat a skin cancer we will not have any problem (which can happen with synthetic implants). In addition, there is always the option to make synthetic implants in the future if they are necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

If excess weight is present, it is important to follow a diet controlled by your doctor in order to avoid the appearance of fat accumulations. In the same way, if the weight is excessively low, it is advisable to follow a diet to gain weight and thus avoid the appearance of atrophy symptoms. Certain diets that are too strict can lead to the appearance of symptoms of atrophy or accumulation, so it is important to know your previous analytical status and the supervision of your doctor.

An adequate diet, physical exercise, good psychological support and medical control are basic to control the evolution of lipodystrophy. The physician may also suggest some type of pharmacological support.

Some hormones, such as growth hormone and testosterone, have been used in the treatment of lipodystrophy. But the potential side effects and complications of their long-term use do not allow them to become a widespread treatment.
