How you see yourself
We have gotten a research paper published that is the first validated version in Spanish of a popular body image test: the MBSRQ (Multidimensional Body Self Relations Questionnaire). This work allows us to know the image a patient has of himself and to verify whether this perception changed after the surgery performed. According to Dr. Ribas, other questionnaires like the BSQ and the semistructured interview BDDE have been adapted to Spanish, but not validated by Rosa Maria Raich et al. There are validations of questionnaires for mental diseases but not for body image in general (at least at scientific journals).
We chose the MBSRQ precisely because it is currently by far the most comprehensive and multidimensional metric tool to assess the body image. The psychometric validation of the Spanish version of the questionnaire has allowed us to reduce it to 45 items from the 69 items of the original version (which makes it easier for its administration).
The questionnaire is interesting for all areas of medicine associated with the body (oncologists, dermatologists, dieticians, reconstructive surgery, aesthetics, psychiatry, psychology, … and many more ). It allows to study scientifically the psychological effect of all that has to do with a variable that has so far been very subjective: body image.
In our particular case, along with the photos we take before and after the surgical procedure, it also gives us a valuable picture of what the patient really thinks of himself/herself.
The paper, written by Luis Botella García del Cid, Emma Ribas and Jesús Benito, has been published in the Revista Argentina de Clínica Psicológica, vol XVIII (November 2009).
